Thalassophobia inspired watercolor set

from €9.50

For the 2023 spooky season, we wanted to channel a phobia many people can relate to (and I myself have): the fear of the deep oceans and the unknown that lies below. Sea monsters have always saturated horror stories and mythological tales. The different creatures from all over the world are wildly inspiring: so we let ourselves be inspired.

This set comes with 4 colors:

  • Kraken. Probably the most well-known monster in this set. A huge octopus set out to destroy your ships, perhaps out of malice, but maybe to keep its eggs safe; as many octopuses do. This creature is represented by a deep wine-purple with a slight brown-orange undertone to it. Made with PO64, PV55 and PV37.

  • Deep Ones. Our second color is probably the least known creature of this set. The novels of H.P. Lovecraft are what inspired this color, as the Deep Ones are water creatures that often make a comeback. Many times described as indescribable, which is what we tried to reflect in the creature painting. Deep Ones is a grey-black, which is a small nod to the fact that this is somewhat a creature left in the past, only to roam in the cryptic stories of Lovecraft himself. It is made with PBK9 and PW6.

  • Hydra. We went back and forth about adding this creature. The hydra is often depicted as a land-dwelling creature nowadays. But there are tales out there of a creature with infinite heads submerging from the waters, unable to be killed and made to proliferate. So as you can see, we decided to add it. A creature so mystical and notorious deserved a spot in this set. Hydra is the most aquatic-seeming color out of the four, as it is a slightly desaturated shade of teal. Made with PB27 and PG17.

  • Leviathan. Last but not least; Leviathan. This is the color and name that inspired this whole set. Leviathan, a deep sea creature so big that people rarely survive to tell the tale. While not necessarily evil, creatures as small as humans are sometimes just.. in the way? Leviathan is the most unique color in this set, it is brown but with a green undertone which surprisingly shows up best in its mass tone! Made with PG 17 and PR175.

This set comes with all 4 colors in either of these sizes: Full, Half, Flat Quarter, and Tiny.
